Kylian Mbappe delivered another unforgettable individual performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but even two goals and an assist were not enough to prevent France from suffering a dramatic 6-4 defeat to England in the third-place play-off.

While the result ended France's tournament on a disappointing note, it proved historic for Mbappe. The 27-year-old captain surpassed Lionel Messi in both the race for the tournament's Golden Boot and the all-time World Cup scoring charts, adding yet another remarkable chapter to his international career.

Mbappe sparked the French comeback by finding the net in the 48th minute, cutting into England's commanding lead. The strike moved him level with Messi on 21 career World Cup goals while also drawing the pair level on nine goals at the 2026 tournament.
