José Mourinho

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has officially denied reports suggesting that José Mourinho is set to become the new head coach of the Portugal national team.

The rumour, which spread rapidly following a report by Turkish outlet Hürriyet Spor, claimed that the Fenerbahçe manager had reached a preliminary agreement to take charge of the national side after the UEFA Nations League Final in early June.

Federation Responds: No Talks, No Plans

In a statement issued on Monday, the FPF dismissed the claims as entirely false, affirming that they are not in talks with any coach regarding the managerial position.

“We are not negotiating with any coach,” a spokesperson said. “Roberto Martínez is our national team manager, and we are fully satisfied with his work.”

Martínez Remains Under Contract Until 2026

Martínez, who took over the Portuguese national team in 2023, is under contract until the summer of 2026. The Spaniard has received positive reviews for his performance so far, with the FPF showing no indication of making a change.

As for the original report, Hürriyet did not cite any specific sources to support its claims, further casting doubt on the credibility of the speculation.
