The 37-year-old veteran confirmed the decision via social media

Inter Miami midfielder Sergio Busquets has officially announced that he will retire from professional football at the end of the 2025 MLS season.

The 37-year-old veteran confirmed the decision via social media, stating that this year will mark the final chapter of his illustrious playing career, which has spanned nearly two decades at the highest level.

“It’s been an incredible journey,” Busquets wrote. “I feel the time has come to say goodbye to my career as a professional footballer. I’ve enjoyed this amazing story — one I dreamed of as a child — for almost 20 years. These are my final months on the pitch. I leave the sport happy, fulfilled, and most of all, grateful. Thank you all — see you soon.”

Busquets, a product of FC Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, made his senior debut in 2008 and went on to become one of the most iconic holding midfielders in the history of the game. He made a total of 722 appearances for the Catalan giants — the third-highest in club history — and was instrumental in an era of dominance both domestically and in Europe.

During his 15-year stint at the Camp Nou, Busquets won nine La Liga titles and three UEFA Champions League trophies, forming a legendary midfield trio alongside Xavi and Andrés Iniesta. In the summer of 2023, he joined Inter Miami, reuniting with former teammate Lionel Messi, and signed a deal through the end of the 2025 season.
