Argentina Reclaim Top Spot in FIFA Rankings Ahead of World Cup Opener

World governing body FIFA released its final Men's World Ranking update just hours before the opening match of the 2026 World Cup, revealing that reigning global champions Argentina have surged back to the pinnacle of international football.
Lionel Scaloni’s men leapfrogged both France and Spain to secure the number one spot for the first time since July 2025. The Albiceleste engineered their return to the summit courtesy of successful pre-tournament warm-up victories against Iceland and Honduras.
While Argentina celebrated their return to the top, previous leaders France suffered a drop of two places to settle into third, following a mixed warm-up campaign that included a defeat to the Ivory Coast before a recovery win over Northern Ireland. Spain held onto second place, while England and Portugal complete a formidable top five.
Meanwhile, Morocco secured a historic milestone by climbing to seventh in the standings, moving ahead of the Netherlands.
