Türkiye Eliminated from FIFA World Cup 2026

The much-hyped "Golden Generation" of Türkiye has endured a disastrous FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign. Vincenzo Montella's side suffered a second consecutive defeat, losing 1-0 to Paraguay and seeing their hopes of reaching the knockout stage officially come to an end.
The match could hardly have started worse for Türkiye. Paraguay struck with their very first attempt on goal, setting the tone for the entire contest. Midfielder Galarza unleashed a superb effort from outside the penalty area, sending the ball into the bottom-left corner and leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.
From that point on, the game followed a familiar and frustrating pattern for Türkiye supporters. Much like their previous defeat against Australia, Montella's team dominated possession and spent long periods camped inside the opposition half. However, controlling the ball did not translate into meaningful opportunities.
The turning point appeared to arrive deep into first-half stoppage time when Miguel Almirón was shown a red card, leaving Paraguay to play the remainder of the match with ten men. The dismissal was a remarkable moment in World Cup history, with the Paraguayan forward penalised after covering his mouth with his hand while speaking to an opponent.
With a numerical advantage for the entire second half, Türkiye seemed perfectly positioned to mount a comeback. Instead, the pattern of the game remained unchanged. Despite wave after wave of attacks, the breakthrough never came.
The statistics only deepened the sense of frustration. A squad packed with players from some of Europe's biggest clubs produced an astonishing 32 shots, yet failed to score a single goal.
When the final whistle sounded, Paraguay celebrated a crucial 1-0 victory that keeps their qualification hopes alive. They will now battle Australia for second place in Group D, while the United States have already secured top spot.
For Turkey, however, the story is over. With one group-stage match still to play, Montella's side have already been eliminated, a bitter outcome for a team that arrived at the FIFA World Cup 2026 carrying significant expectations and ambitions.
