Real Madrid's Revolution: Modrić Era Nears Its End
Real Madrid are reportedly planning a significant squad refresh ahead of the 2025/26 season, with several veteran players expected to depart the Santiago Bernabéu, according to Diario AS.
Among those certain to leave is out-of-favour defender Jesús Vallejo, whose contract expires in June 2025. But more notably, club legends Luka Modrić and Lucas Vázquez also face uncertain futures, with their current deals also set to expire this summer. Both players have expressed a desire to extend their stay for at least one more season, but at this stage, Los Blancos are not considering new offers.
As per the report, Real are actively seeking a new midfielder to succeed Modrić, signalling the end of an era for the 38-year-old Ballon d'Or winner. Meanwhile, with the anticipated arrival of Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool, the club sees no future role for Vázquez, who has served as a reliable utility man over the years.
There is also growing uncertainty surrounding David Alaba. While the Austrian defender is under contract until 2026, the potential signing of Dean Huijsen this summer could push Alaba to the bench, raising questions over his long-term role. Though there are some doubts internally about Antonio Rüdiger as well, the German centre-back is currently more likely to remain at the club.
All signs point to a clear strategy: Real Madrid are preparing to move on from their ageing core in favour of fresh, young talent, as they look to build a new dynasty at the Bernabéu.
