Williams Warns South Africa: If you make mistakes, they will punish you

South Africa captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams offered a pragmatic assessment of his side’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the World Cup opener, admitting the squad has been handed a harsh reality check regarding the unforgiving nature of elite international football.
Speaking to the official FIFA website, the veteran shot-stopper emphasized that Bafana Bafana paid the price for individual errors—most notably Sphephelo Sithole’s catastrophic first-half giveaway and subsequent red card—but urged his teammates to view the match as a crucial learning curve.
"If you make mistakes, they will punish you. They will hurt you at this level," Williams warned. "I think the most important thing is that now we know what we’re up against, because we’re not used to this. We haven’t been part of the World Cup for a very long time
Despite the opening-day setback in Mexico City, which was compounded by late dismissals for Themba Zwane and a heavily depleted roster for the next match, Williams remained defiant about South Africa's remaining chances in Group A.
He praised his team’s resilience under intense psychological pressure at the Azteca and pointed out that, even when reduced to ten men, the African nation managed to restrict the hosts' attacking fluidity for significant stretches of the second half.
"We went down, but we kept fighting," the captain insisted. "We didn’t give them anything towards the end. We had a few decent chances as well. We’ll keep fighting, we’ll keep going as a team, and we’ll be better.
South Africa will need that improved discipline when they face Czechia in their second group fixture, where avoiding further errors will be paramount to keeping their knockout-stage dreams alive.
