Gareth Southgate, England manager, speaking to the press after the draw against Italy:

- I thought we did well – I think we finished with 59 per cent possession. We created plenty of chances, but when you create those kinds of chances you need to convert them. Unfortunately we weren’t able to do that tonight.

I thought Aaron Ramsdale did very well tonight – he made two big saves for us. I thought James Ward-Prowse did well too in midfield. There were plenty of good performances, just not enough to get the win.

Obviously we want to score more goals. We’re still too reliant on Harry [Kane], and probably Raheem Sterling too – they score the majority of our goals. That’s something we’re obviously looking to work on.

There’s been a little bit of a lack of sharpness in all three games, but we also played an Italian team who were very well organised. I was very pleased with how we got through their initial press. We had a lot of the ball, but having the ball doesn’t guarantee that you win football matches.
