CONCACAF Gold Cup 2025: USA Reach Semi-Finals, Canada Crash Out
Team USA are through to the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2025 semi-finals after a dramatic penalty shootout win over Costa Rica, while Canada saw their journey come to a heartbreaking end against Guatemala.
In a tense quarter-final clash, the United States were pushed to the limit. Despite US twice scoring through Luna (43’) and Arfsten (47’), Costa Rica refused to go quietly, with Calvo converting a penalty early (12’) and Martínez equalizing midway through the second half (71’). With the score locked at 2-2 after extra time, the match was settled from the spot.
It all came down to the sixth round of penalties. Andy Rojas missed for Costa Rica, and Damion Downs held his nerve to fire the USA into the final four, winning the shootout 4-3.
Elsewhere, Canada saw red—and then saw the door. Down to ten men after Jacob Shaffelburg was sent off late in the first half, the Canadians held on for a 1-1 draw against an energetic Guatemala side. Jonathan David had opened the scoring from the penalty spot (30’), but Rubín struck back for Guatemala (69’).
In the penalty shootout, it was heartbreak for Canada, who missed two of their spot-kicks as Guatemala edged it 6-5 to reach a historic semi-final.
