World Cup 2026 Qualifiers: England and Portugal Headline Today’s Action
The road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup continues today, 6 September, with several key qualifying clashes across Europe. All eyes will be on top-tier national sides England and Portugal as they look to solidify their positions early in the campaign.
Portugal, winners of the most recent UEFA Nations League, kick off their Group F qualifying campaign with an away fixture against Armenia. Led by their star-studded squad, the Portuguese will be expected to start strong in Yerevan.
Elsewhere in Group F, Hungary travel to face Republic of Ireland in what promises to be a competitive encounter. The last time these two sides met — in Dublin in 2024 — Ireland came out on top with a narrow 2-1 victory.
In Group K, England return to action at Wembley after a frustrating 1-0 win away to Andorra in Round 3. Head coach Thomas Tuchel expressed disappointment with his side’s performance in that game and will demand a more convincing display tonight on home turf.
Another historic fixture takes place in the same group, as Latvia face Serbia for the first time ever in international competition.
Group H also features two matches today: Austria host Cyprus in Vienna, while San Marino will aim to spring a surprise at home against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
