Japan U-20 Become First Team to Reach Knockouts at FIFA U-20 World Cup 2025
Group A action at the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2025 in Chile delivered early drama — and our first confirmed qualifier for the knockout stage.
Japan U-20 booked their place in the Round of 16 with a confident 2–0 win over hosts Chile U-20. The Asian side dominated proceedings and could have made the scoreline even more convincing, had they not missed a penalty in the second half.
While technically still able to finish third in the group, Japan have already secured enough points to guarantee a spot in the next round as one of the four best third-placed teams — if it comes to that. But their current form suggests they're aiming much higher.
For Chile U-20, the pressure is now on. Their route to the knockouts hinges on a must-win final group match against Egypt U-20, who remain bottom of the table after a narrow 2–1 loss to New Zealand U-20.
Despite Egypt's winless status, Group A remains wide open. All four teams still have a mathematical chance of finishing in the top two — setting up a tense final matchday.
