Gattuso made an emotional statement

Italy head coach Gennaro Gattuso made an emotional statement following his team’s 3-0 win over Israel in 2026 World Cup qualifying, vowing to leave the country if the Azzurri fail to reach the tournament’s final stage.

“If we qualify, I’ll take the credit — but if we don’t, I’ll leave Italy,” Gattuso declared. “I already live quite far from home, but I’m ready to go even further. I’ve always said that being here is a dream, and that’s the truth.”

Reflecting on Italy’s campaign so far, the coach urged caution ahead of the play-offs. “If we reach the play-offs, we can’t underestimate anyone. Football has changed, and no one knows better than Italy how dangerous knockout matches can be,” he warned.

Gattuso also praised his players and staff for their commitment: “We work a lot and sleep very little, but winning makes it all worthwhile. I must thank the Federation, the president, and Buffon. I didn’t expect us to score 16 goals, but that’s all down to the players.”

Italy, who have collected 15 points from six matches, have already secured a play-off spot but remain three points behind Norway in Group I ahead of their decisive November clash with the Scandinavians. They will also face Moldova earlier that month.
