The decision reflects a desire for stability and experience at a critical moment for Czech football

The Czech Republic national team has officially announced the appointment of Miroslav Koubek as its new head coach. The experienced tactician replaces Ivan Hašek, who was dismissed following a shock 2–1 defeat to the Faroe Islands in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

The 74-year-old has signed a contract running until June 2028, meaning he will lead the national side through the current European Championship cycle, including UEFA Euro 2028. The decision reflects a desire for stability and experience at a critical moment for Czech football.

Miroslav Koubek is a well-known figure in domestic football, having worked with several of the country’s most prominent clubs, including Sparta Prague, Banik Ostrava, Mlada Boleslav, Viktoria Plzen, Slavia Prague and Bohemians 1905. His greatest success came with Viktoria Plzen, whom he guided to the Czech First League title and victory in the Czech Super Cup.

Koubek now faces an immediate challenge on the international stage. On March 26, the Czech Republic will face Ireland in the semi-finals of the World Cup qualification play-offs. The winner of that clash will then meet either Denmark or North Macedonia in the decisive match for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
