Young Boys - Lyon 0:1

Lyon secured direct qualification for the round of 16 of the UEFA Europa League after a hard-earned 1–0 away victory over Young Boys, confirming their place in the competition’s top eight with a game to spare.

On a notoriously difficult artificial surface in Bern, Paulo Fonseca’s side delivered a disciplined and pragmatic performance, prioritising control and defensive structure over attacking flair. Clear chances were limited, but Lyon remained patient and alert to opportunities.

The decisive moment arrived late in the first half. Capitalising on confusion inside the Young Boys penalty area, Ainsley Maitland-Niles reacted quickest to fire home the only goal of the match, giving the visitors a crucial lead heading into the break.

The Swiss champions pushed hard for an equaliser after the restart and came agonisingly close, rattling the crossbar during a sustained spell of pressure. However, Lyon’s defence stood firm, anchored by an outstanding display from Ruben Kluivert.
