Football took a back seat in Odense as the international friendly between Denmark and Ukraine was abandoned after a worrying incident involving Christian Eriksen.

The match marked the second outing for Ukraine under head coach Andrea Maldera, but it was the hosts who controlled much of the first half. Denmark took the lead in the 13th minute when Patrick Dorgu broke free from his marker and unleashed a powerful long-range strike beyond Anatolii Trubin.

The Ukrainian goalkeeper was called into action again midway through the half, producing an excellent save to deny Joachim Andersen, who met a dangerous free-kick delivery from Eriksen. Moments later, however, the Danish pressure paid off once more. Trubin initially kept out an effort from Conrad Harder Høgh, but Joakim Mæhle reacted quickest to the rebound to make it 2-0.

Denmark continued to threaten and came close to extending their advantage on several occasions. Mæhle was denied after a heavy touch allowed Trubin to intervene, while Osula narrowly missed the far post from a tight angle.

Ukraine, meanwhile, showed flashes of attacking quality. Heorhii Sudakov released Roman Yaremchuk with a clever pass, but the striker failed to keep control of the ball when through on goal. Later, Volodymyr Nazarina tested the Danish goalkeeper with a powerful effort from distance.

The visitors found a way back into the contest just before half-time. Vitalii Mykolenko delivered an excellent pass into the penalty area for Yaremchuk. Although a defender managed to intervene, the loose ball fell kindly for Viktor Tsyhankov, who calmly slotted home to reduce the deficit.

Ukraine thought they had equalised in stoppage time when a Danish defender turned the ball into his own net following a cross from Ocheretko. However, the goal was ruled out for offside against Yaremchuk, leaving Denmark with a 2-1 lead at the interval.

The second half continued at an intense pace. Mykola Matviyenko produced an important intervention after a defensive mistake threatened to send Dorgu clear on goal, while at the other end Høgsberg came close to scoring an unfortunate own goal under pressure from the Ukrainian attack.

Then came the moment that changed everything.

In the 65th minute, Christian Eriksen went down on the pitch, immediately bringing back memories of the dramatic scenes from UEFA Euro 2020 when the Danish star collapsed during a match against Finland. Silence swept across the stadium as medical staff rushed onto the field.

For around ten minutes, players from both teams stood together while Eriksen received treatment. Thankfully, the experienced midfielder was eventually able to leave the pitch on his own feet, accompanied by teammates and opponents alike.

Following discussions between officials, coaches and players, the decision was made not to restart the match. Instead, both squads formed a circle at the centre of the field in a powerful display of respect and solidarity for a Eriksen.

On a night that began as a football match, the final score became irrelevant. The overwhelming feeling inside the stadium was one shared by everyone present: Christian Eriksen’s health mattered far more than the result.
