Dominik Szoboszlai rescued Liverpool from a dramatic defeat at Newcastle United, scoring a stoppage-time penalty to snatch a 2-2 draw in a thrilling Premier League opener.
The home side were just seconds away from securing all three points when Lewis Hall conceded a penalty in the box. Dominik Szoboszlai kept his cool from the spot, beating the goalkeeper and denying Newcastle United a memorable victory.
Before kick-off, players and supporters paid an emotional tribute to Kevin Keegan, who passed away shortly before the start of the new season. The former Newcastle United manager had been battling cancer and had hoped to personally say goodbye to the club's supporters, but sadly never got the chance.
The emotional atmosphere quickly spilled onto the pitch. Newcastle United made the perfect start, taking the lead after just four minutes. Following a turnover inside their own penalty area, the hosts launched a rapid counter-attack, with Anthony Elanga racing through on goal before calmly finishing his one-on-one opportunity.
Liverpool eventually found their way back into the game early in the second half. Cody Gakpo was given time and space on the edge of the penalty area and made no mistake, sending a low shot into the far corner to level the score.
But the visitors' joy lasted barely two minutes. Newcastle United struck again on the counter, with Joe Willock finishing another swift attacking move to restore the hosts' advantage at 2-1.
It appeared that Matthias Jaissle was heading for a remarkable victory in his first competitive match in charge of Newcastle United. Instead, the game produced a final twist. Lewis Hall was penalised for a foul inside the box and referee Stuart Attwell pointed to the spot.
Dominik Szoboszlai stepped up and converted the penalty with virtually the last kick of the game, earning Liverpool a dramatic 2-2 draw.
