Atletico Madrid - Villarreal 2:2

Atletico Madrid were forced to fight back from a difficult position as they escaped with a 2-2 draw against Villarreal in a dramatic La Liga encounter.

The match began in an extraordinary atmosphere, with sections of the home support greeting Julian Alvarez with a chorus of boos. The reaction reflected the frustration surrounding the forward following the twists and turns of his recent transfer saga.

Pau Cubarsi then put the hosts ahead with a spectacular strike from outside the penalty area, sending the crowd into a frenzy. But Villarreal responded quickly and completely changed the momentum of the contest.

First, Gerard Moreno converted a penalty to level the score. Georges Mikautadze then put the Yellow Submarine in front from the spot, while the same incident saw Robin Le Normand shown a straight red card.

Reduced to 10 men, Atletico Madrid looked to be heading for defeat. But Giuliano Simeone produced a moment of quality in the closing stages, elegantly finishing a flowing move after being picked out by Alex Baena.
