Schalke 04 marked the return of the Bundesliga to the Veltins-Arena with a memorable 0-0 draw against reigning champions Bayern Munich. The standout performer was Schalke goalkeeper Loris Karius, who produced a string of superb saves to deny the visitors.

In the first half, Karius kept out efforts from Brown and Luis Diaz, before producing more crucial interventions after the break to thwart dangerous attacks from Michael Olise and Harry Kane.

Bayern Munich dominated possession and created the majority of the pressure, with Jamal Musiala returning to the squad after his recent health problems. However, the champions were unable to break through a disciplined and well-organised Schalke defence.

The hosts were not simply content to defend, either. Schalke threatened on the counter-attack, with Aouchiche and Souleymane Sané involved in several promising breaks, but neither side could find the decisive touch.
