A gruelling tactical siege in Naples ended with a 1-0 victory for Arsenal over a deeply defensive Napoli side. The status of the Gunners as one of the Champions League favourites was pushed to the limit by the Italian defensive wall, but a decisive strike from Martin Odegaard in the 75th minute ensured Arsenal began their European campaign with three points.

Napoli attempted to turn the opening stages into a slow, physical battle, relying on occasional attacking breaks through Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian midfielder tested the visitors with a dangerous long-range effort in the 15th minute, forcing Arsenal to remain alert. The ball took a deflection off Milinkovic-Savic and the post before squeezing into the net.
