Champions League Record Broken: 78 Goals in 18 Matches

The second matchday of the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League league phase has gone down in history as the most prolific round in the competition's history. A remarkable 78 goals were scored across 18 matches, producing an extraordinary average of 4.33 goals per game and setting a new benchmark for attacking football in Europe's elite club competition.
Europe's leading clubs delivered a spectacular showcase of goals and attacking intent. Belgian side Club Brugge and Italian giants Inter Milan played out a thrilling 4-3 encounter, while English heavyweights Liverpool defeated Austrian outfit LASK 6-3. Elsewhere, Real Madrid edged AS Roma 4-3 in a dramatic contest, and French champions Paris Saint-Germain secured an impressive 4-2 away victory over English champions Manchester City. These high-scoring encounters played a major role in establishing the new record.
The previous scoring benchmark had been set only one season earlier, during Matchday 3 of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League league phase. On that occasion, 71 goals were scored across 18 fixtures, averaging 3.94 goals per match. The latest total comfortably surpassed that mark, underlining the increasingly attack-minded nature of Europe's top-level club football.
The competition's revamped format has also played a role in creating new statistical milestones. Introduced in the 2024/25 season, the league phase replaced the traditional group stage and expanded the competition to 36 clubs. With 18 matches now played on each matchday, compared with 16 under the previous format, there are more opportunities for goal records to be challenged.
