Inter vs Shakhtar preview: Can Arda Turan's side break their San Siro curse?

Shakhtar Donetsk arrive at matchday three of their Champions League campaign having navigated two contrasting European tests. After an opening clash against Dutch outfit PSV Eindhoven—the lowest-ranked side from Pot Two—the Miners recorded an emphatic victory over Pot Four representatives AEK Athens.

Tonight, however, presents a tactical challenge of an entirely different magnitude. Inter Milan sit comfortably among the competition’s elite five contenders, and an erratic start to their European campaign should deceive no one.

Historical precedent: A one-sided affair

While every European night writes its own script, the historical trends between these two clubs make for grim reading from a Ukrainian perspective. Wednesday marks the eighth competitive meeting between Inter and Shakhtar, and the Miners have never tasted victory. Even more damning is their goalscoring return: in seven previous attempts, Shakhtar have breached the Nerazzurri defence just once. That solitary strike came over two decades ago, in the summer of 2005, when Elano found the net behind closed doors at the Giuseppe Meazza following a 2-0 first-leg defeat in Donetsk.

Six years ago, Antonio Conte’s Inter ruthlessly dismantled Shakhtar 5-0 in a one-legged, pandemic-affected Europa League semi-final in Germany. Three successive goalless stalemates followed—respectable defensive displays for the Ukrainian side given the disparity—before Roberto De Zerbi’s intimate knowledge of Calcio failed to prevent a routine 2-0 defeat in November 2021. Yet footballing sequences exist to be broken, and Arda Turan will believe his squad can author a historic breakthrough.

Contrasting philosophies in squad building

The two clubs embody diametrically opposed transfer strategies. Shakhtar remain committed to their traditional model of scouting unpolished Brazilian gems, refining them in Europe, and moving them on for substantial profit. The current crop is spearheaded by Alisson, Marlon Gomes, and Kauã Elias, with replacements already lined up in the wings. However, fielding a side heavy on youthful Brazilian flair comes with an inevitable learning curve as raw prospects adjust to the tactical rigours and intensity of elite European football.

Inter, by contrast, represent the model of Italian domestic consistency, backed by significant financial leverage. The Nerazzurri committed €101m to their squad this past summer, headlined by the marquee €30m arrivals of 26-year-old Djed Spence from Tottenham Hotspur and 25-year-old Curtis Jones from Liverpool. The investment has shaped an experienced, battle-hardened core with an average age of 28.3, compared to Shakhtar’s youthful 24.2.

The discrepancy extends to market valuations: Inter’s squad is valued at approximately €740m, nearly four times Shakhtar’s €197m. Yet financial supremacy guarantees nothing; Club Brugge, boasting an even younger profile and a modest €238m valuation, stunned the San Siro just a week ago in a 4-3 thriller.

Form, rotation, and logistical demands

Assessing momentum following the October international break reveals two differing preparation paths. Inter have enjoyed minimal travel disruption, having merely ventured to Bologna in Serie A over the weekend before returning home to Milan. Shakhtar’s routine remains far more grueling, requiring arduous cross-border bus journeys into Poland to reach the nearest departures in Rzeszów.

On the pitch, Cristian Chivu has managed his resources carefully. Across three fixtures this month—a 3:0 win over Parma, the 3:4 defeat to Brugge, and a 3:1 domestic rebound at Bologna—the Romanian tactician utilised 23 different players. Only goalkeeper Josep Martínez and central defender Yann Bisseck completed all 270 minutes, while Marcus Thuram and Federico Dimarco started all three before being substituted. Nine core players have logged over 160 minutes across the last two games, raising questions regarding their sharpness over a demanding three-match week.

Turan’s tactical roadmap has been far more calculated. After fielding a first-choice line-up to regain cohesion in a 3-0 league win over Veres, he made just a single alteration for the 3-1 victory against AEK Athens. Having secured those results, Turan rotated 72 per cent of his starting eleven against Kolos last weekend, resting key personnel to ensure his side arrive in Milan fresh and primed for European combat.

Prediction and outlook

Turan cut a frustrated figure during Tuesday's pre-match press conference, visibly bristling at suggestions that his side arrive as complete outsiders. The data, however, reflects the scale of the task facing the visitors. Opta’s supercomputer hands Inter a decisive 75 per cent probability of taking all three points, assigning Shakhtar just a 25 per cent chance of leaving with a draw or a historic win.

Inter host Shakhtar Donetsk at the San Siro tonight, with kick-off scheduled for 21:00 CET.
