South Korea’s thrilling, come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Czechia in their Group A opener has drawn renewed attention to the Taeguk Warriors. In doing so, a series of remarkable statistics have come to light, solidifying the nation's proud history on the global stage.

Since the 1986 tournament in Mexico, an elite group of just five countries has managed to qualify for every single edition of the FIFA World Cup. South Korea proudly stands alongside footballing superpowers Brazil, Spain, Germany, and Argentina in maintaining an unbroken 40-year streak of World Cup appearances.

The match at the Estadio Guadalajara also marked a momentous personal milestone for Asian football icon Son Heung-min. By taking to the pitch against the Czechs, the talismanic captain has now officially featured in four consecutive World Cups, spanning Brazil 2014, Russia 2018, Qatar 2022, and now the 2026 finals.

With this feat, Son has equalled a historic national record, joining an exclusive club previously occupied only by his current national team manager, Hong Myung-bo. The legendary former sweeper represented his country as a player across four consecutive tournaments between 1990 and 2002, famously captaining the side to a historic fourth-place finish on home soil.

Now reunited as coach and captain, the iconic duo will look to draw on their vast World Cup experience as South Korea prepare for a highly anticipated clash against co-hosts Mexico on 19 June.
