Argentina maintains its position as the group leader

Argentina suffered a surprising 2-1 defeat to Paraguay in the 11th round of South American qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite the loss, Lionel Scaloni’s side remains at the top of the standings, while Paraguay climbed to sixth, just one point shy of third-place Brazil.

The match started brightly for Argentina, as Lautaro Martínez capitalized on a well-placed pass from Enzo Fernández to put the visitors ahead in the 11th minute. However, Paraguay quickly leveled the score with a moment of brilliance. Antonio Sanabria delivered an acrobatic bicycle kick that left Emiliano Martínez with no chance, sending the home crowd into raptures.

Paraguay took the lead early in the second half when Omar Alderete connected with a pinpoint cross from Diego Gómez, heading the ball off the post and into the net. The goal proved decisive, as Argentina struggled to find an equalizer despite dominating possession.
