Speculation surrounding Russia's potential participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup has resurfaced, fueled by ongoing discussions about a possible resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. However, sources within the Russian football community remain pessimistic about any near-term return to international competition.

No Invitation to the Qualification Draw

According to reports from Russian sports network Match TV, the team will not be included in the qualification draw scheduled for December 13. An anonymous source within the channel stated:

"This will not happen. The team cannot participate in the qualification phase due to ongoing security concerns. UEFA and FIFA have maintained their stance on Russia's suspension since the beginning of the conflict. The team will not be eligible to compete for a spot in the World Cup."

This reinforces the firm position taken by FIFA and UEFA to exclude Russia from international tournaments following the invasion of Ukraine.

Speculation About a Special Invitation

Despite the pessimism, some voices within Russia have floated the idea of a "special invitation" that might allow the team to bypass the qualification draw and be directly placed into a group. However, the feasibility and justification for such a move remain highly questionable. With FIFA and UEFA's focus on maintaining global solidarity and fairness, any such decision would likely face widespread opposition.
