Argentina solidified their position as leaders of the South American World Cup 2026 Qualifiers with a narrow but well-deserved 1-0 win over Peru in Buenos Aires. The reigning world champions, powered by the magical connection between Lionel Messi and Lautaro Martínez, ensured they ended the year on top.

Dominance Without Reward in the First Half

Argentina controlled the game from the outset, with their relentless attacking play pinning Peru deep in their half. However, luck seemed to favor the visitors before halftime. Julián Álvarez came closest to breaking the deadlock, striking the post after a swift counterattack, while Alexis Mac Allister narrowly missed the target with a header.

Martínez Delivers the Decisive Moment

The breakthrough finally came in the 55th minute. Messi delivered an exquisite cross from the left, and Martínez executed a spectacular overhead kick to send the ball into the back of the net, leaving Peru’s defense and goalkeeper Pedro Gallese helpless.

Argentina’s Grip on Qualification

The victory leaves Argentina firmly at the top of the CONMEBOL qualifying table, five points clear of second-placed Uruguay. Meanwhile, Peru’s struggles continued, as they slid to the bottom of the standings. With six direct qualification spots available, Argentina looks poised for another World Cup journey, while Peru faces an uphill battle.
