Manchester City’s early exit from the UEFA Champions League has dealt a significant financial blow to the club. Their defeat to Real Madrid in the Round of 16 (2-3, 1-3) will see them miss out on tens of millions in potential earnings.

Last season, after reaching the quarterfinals, City received £90 million in prize money from UEFA. However, according to The Athletic, this year’s elimination at an earlier stage will see them collect approximately £64 million for their group stage and knockout round appearances—£26 million less than in the previous campaign.

This premature Champions League exit could also have a ripple effect on City’s summer transfer plans. Moreover, their qualification for next season’s tournament is far from guaranteed. Pep Guardiola’s side is currently battling to stay in the Premier League’s top four, making the final stretch of the domestic season crucial for their European ambitions.

With financial implications mounting, Manchester City must now turn their focus to domestic competitions to salvage their season and secure a spot in next year’s Champions League.
