Italy Loses Forward Matteo Retegui Ahead of Nations League Clash with Germany
The Italian national team has been dealt a blow ahead of their upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Germany, as forward Matteo Retegui has been ruled out due to injury. The Atalanta striker left the training camp after medical tests revealed a right thigh muscle strain.
"This morning, Retegui underwent medical examinations that confirmed a muscle strain in his right thigh. As a result, he will be unable to participate in both Nations League matches against Germany," read a statement from the Italian Football Federation.
It remains unclear whether head coach Luciano Spalletti will call up a replacement for Retegui. The 24-year-old has been a key figure for the Azzurri since his debut in 2023, scoring six goals in 18 appearances. His absence will be felt as Italy looks to secure positive results against a strong German side.
Retegui joined Atalanta from Genoa in the summer of 2024 as a replacement for the injured Gianluca Scamacca. He quickly established himself as a vital player for the Bergamo-based club, showcasing his goal-scoring prowess and adaptability.
