Sporting CP have been crowned Primeira Liga champions

Sporting CP have been crowned Primeira Liga champions for the second consecutive season — an achievement the Lisbon giants last managed 71 years ago. The title was secured on the final day of the 2024/25 Portuguese league campaign with a composed 2-0 win over Vitória Guimarães at the Estádio José Alvalade.

Goals from Pedro Gonçalves and star striker Viktor Gyökeres sealed the victory, sparking wild celebrations across the capital as Sporting claimed their long-awaited historic repeat.

Benfica, who had matched Sporting nearly point-for-point throughout the season, faltered when it mattered most. A disappointing 1-1 draw against Braga saw them drop crucial points. Ukrainian goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin was unable to stop a Rodrigo Zalazar penalty in the 24th minute. Despite Vangelis Pavlidis equalising and Braga going down to 10 men in the 66th minute, Benfica couldn't capitalise and ultimately had to settle for second place.

FC Porto finished third, nine points behind Benfica. A routine 3-0 victory over Nacional closed their season, but it had no bearing on the title race or Champions League qualification.

European Qualification – 2025/26 Season

  • Sporting CP – UEFA Champions League (group stage)
  • Benfica – UEFA Champions League (third qualifying round)
  • FC Porto – UEFA Europa League (group stage)
  • SC Braga – UEFA Europa League (second qualifying round)
  • Vitória Guimarães – UEFA Conference League (second qualifying round)
