Girona’s nightmare end to the La Liga season continued

Girona’s nightmare end to the La Liga season continued on Saturday, as they were crushed 4-0 by a relentless Atlético Madrid side — despite a heroic performance from goalkeeper Vladyslav Krapivtsev.

Making only his second appearance between the sticks for the Catalan club, Krapivtsev kept Atlético at bay for over an hour with a string of spectacular saves — eight in total — that temporarily kept the scoreline level and made him Girona’s standout player on the night.

But the match turned decisively when Alexander Sørloth was introduced from the bench. The Norwegian forward delivered a devastating 30-minute masterclass, scoring a sensational hat-trick and completely dismantling a tired Girona backline. It was a display that underlined the physical and technical gap between the two sides on the day.

Girona, who at one point earlier in the campaign had dreams of a Champions League return, now finish the season in disarray — winless in their last five matches and slipping out of European contention altogether.
