Team USA Crowned Ice Hockey World Champions After Overtime Thriller Against Switzerland
Team USA has ended a 91-year wait to claim IIHF World Championship gold, edging past a resilient Switzerland side 1–0 in a dramatic overtime finale.
The decisive moment came just three minutes into OT, when Tage Thompson finished off a rapid counter-attack with a rocket past Swiss goaltender Leonardo Genoni, sending American fans into raptures and sealing the United States’ first world title since 1933.
Genoni, who was later named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, delivered a heroic performance between the pipes, keeping Switzerland in the game with a series of world-class saves throughout regulation. His efforts earned the Swiss a well-deserved silver medal — their first since 2018.
On the awards front, Zach Werenski (USA) was named Best Defenseman of the tournament, while David Pastrňák (Czech Republic) took home the honor of Best Forward.
