Kylian Mbappé Wins 2024/25 European Golden Shoe Despite Gyökeres Scoring More
Kylian Mbappé has claimed the European Golden Shoe for the 2024/25 season, finishing as the top scorer across Europe’s top domestic leagues — at least according to UEFA’s official coefficient system.
The Real Madrid forward netted 31 goals in La Liga, earning 62 points under the ranking formula, which multiplies goals scored in top-tier leagues (like La Liga, Premier League, Serie A) by a factor of 2.
Curiously, Viktor Gyökeres of Sporting CP outscored everyone with 39 goals in the Portuguese Primeira Liga — eight more than Mbappé — but due to the league’s coefficient (1.5), he ended up with only 58.5 points, falling just short.
Mohamed Salah and Robert Lewandowski were the only players with a mathematical chance of overtaking Mbappé on the final day. Salah needed a hat-trick, but managed just a single goal, while Lewandowski would have required an unlikely six-goal haul against Athletic Club.
As a result, Mbappé becomes the first Real Madrid player since Cristiano Ronaldo to bring the Golden Shoe back to the Spanish capital.
