This moment marks the culmination of decades of near misses and relentless ambition from the Uzbek national team

Uzbekistan have officially qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2026, marking a historic moment for the Central Asian nation. A hard-fought 0–0 draw against the United Arab Emirates in AFC qualifying was enough to secure their place in football’s biggest tournament — set to be held across the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

The result sees Uzbekistan reach 18 points in Group A with one game to spare, putting them four clear of UAE and guaranteeing a top-two finish and direct qualification. This moment marks the culmination of decades of near misses and relentless ambition from the Uzbek national team.

Nicknamed the White Wolves, Uzbekistan will now head to the World Cup finals for the very first time. Since gaining independence in 1991 following the breakup of the Soviet Union, the country has consistently competed in World Cup qualifiers — but never made it to the final stage, until now.

The expansion of the tournament from 32 to 48 teams has provided Asia with eight qualification spots (up from five), opening the door for emerging football nations to make history — and Uzbekistan have seized that opportunity in style.

Uzbekistan now become the third Asian side to secure a spot at the 2026 World Cup, joining Iran and Japan.
