Organisers are reportedly considering moving the Olympics to autumn

Qatar has officially entered the competition to host the 2036 Summer Olympics, joining a growing list of contenders that includes Ahmedabad (India), Istanbul (Turkey), Nusantara (Indonesia), and Santiago (Chile), according to The Guardian.

The Gulf nation’s bid is expected to be formally submitted in the coming months. One of Qatar’s strongest advantages lies in its world-class infrastructure. According to Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, the country already has “95% of the necessary sporting venues” in place. Additionally, a broad operational plan for the Games has reportedly been drafted and is ready for implementation.

However, Qatar’s Olympic ambitions come with a major challenge: the region’s extreme summer heat. With temperatures regularly soaring above 40°C (104°F), hosting a traditional July–August Games could pose health and logistical risks. Organisers are reportedly considering moving the Olympics to autumn — much like the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which was held in November and December to avoid the blistering summer climate.
