Official: Kasper Hjulmand Appointed as New Head Coach of Bayer
Hjulmand, 52, is best known for his impressive spell with the Denmark national team, which he led to the semi-finals of UEFA Euro 2020 (played in 2021 due to the pandemic). His side captured hearts across Europe, notably recovering from the traumatic incident involving Christian Eriksen, and came within touching distance of the final — narrowly losing to England in extra time at Wembley.
However, following Denmark’s early exit at UEFA Euro 2024, where they were knocked out in the Round of 16 by hosts Germany (0–2), Hjulmand stepped down from his role after four years in charge. His transition back to club football comes at a critical moment for Leverkusen.
Hjulmand replaces Dutch manager Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed after just a few matchdays into the new Bundesliga campaign.
