Benfica have parted ways with head coach Bruno Lage following a stunning 3-2 defeat to Azerbaijani side Qarabag FK in the opening round of the UEFA Champions League group stage.

The decision was confirmed by club president Rui Costa, who addressed fans through an official statement posted on the club’s website.

"I want to inform all Benfica supporters that we have reached a mutual agreement with Bruno Lage, who will no longer serve as the club's head coach, effective immediately," Costa announced. "I would like to thank Bruno for everything he tried to achieve here... but unfortunately, the time has come — it’s time for change."
