Newcastle United - Barcelona 1:2

Marcus Rashford returned to English soil and reminded Newcastle United fans just how dangerous he can be. His brace at St James’ Park secured a 2–1 victory for Barcelona in their opening UEFA Champions League Group Stage fixture.

Newcastle started the match with tremendous energy and looked determined to make a statement against one of Europe’s elite. Just six minutes in, Anthony Elanga fired in a sharp low cross from the right, but Anthony Gordon failed to make contact in front of goal — a huge let-off for Barcelona.

The Catalans attempted to calm the tempo through controlled possession, but the Magpies remained a constant threat on the break. Their biggest opportunity came in the 24th minute when Elanga broke the offside trap and surged down the wing. His cutback found Harvey Barnes, who struck first-time — only for Joan García to save brilliantly with his foot.

After the break, Barcelona turned up the intensity — and Marcus Rashford turned up the heat. The English forward, who has made a habit of scoring against Newcastle in recent years, struck twice in quick succession to swing the match firmly in Barça’s favour.

The opener came in the 58th minute. After a broken counter-attack, Raphinha recovered the ball and laid it off to Jules Koundé, who delivered a precise cross into the box. Rashford rose and guided his header past the keeper to make it 1–0.

Just nine minutes later, Rashford doubled the lead. He pounced on a loose ball following a poor clearance from Dan Burn and unleashed a powerful drive from outside the area — it clipped the underside of the bar before crashing into the net. A thunderous strike, and a record-extending moment for the England international.

At 2–0, the noise at St James’ Park died down — and many in black and white had already accepted defeat. But Newcastle weren't done just yet. In the 84th minute, Jacob Murphy delivered a pinpoint cross from the right, and Gordon tapped home to breathe life back into the match.

With seven minutes of added time, the Magpies pressed for an equaliser. But Flick’s side expertly controlled possession and limited the hosts to just one more shot — a long-range effort from Sandro Tonali that sailed just over.
