Shakhtar have climbed to the top of the Ukrainian Premier League

Shakhtar Donetsk have climbed to the top of the Ukrainian Premier League for the first time this season, following a dominant 4-0 victory over Rukh Lviv and dropped points by title rivals Dynamo Kyiv and Kolos Kovalivka.

Heading into Matchday 7, the three sides were locked in a three-way tie at the summit of the table, each on 14 points. But the landscape shifted dramatically over the weekend.

Dynamo Kyiv were held to a thrilling 3-3 draw by Karpaty Lviv, while Kolos suffered a narrow 0-1 defeat at the hands of Metalist 1925.

Shakhtar took full advantage of their rivals’ stumbles, putting in a statement performance against Rukh. The 4-0 rout sees the Miners move to 17 points — two clear of Dynamo, who sit second. Metalist 1925 and Kolos are now tied for third with 14 points each.
