Diego Simeone Suspended by UEFA
Atletico Madrid will be without head coach Diego Simeone for tonight’s UEFA Champions League fixture against Eintracht Frankfurt, after UEFA handed the Argentine a one-match suspension for "unsporting behaviour".
The ban comes as a result of a heated exchange between Simeone and Liverpool fans at Anfield during Matchday 1, where Atletico suffered a defeat in their group stage opener.
This disciplinary ruling adds further pressure on Atletico, who now face the current group leaders from Frankfurt without their talismanic manager on the sidelines.
Eintracht Frankfurt impressed with a convincing victory on the opening day, while Atletico must now regroup and respond — and they’ll have to do it without Simeone’s trademark intensity on the touchline.
UEFA has also issued a separate fine to Liverpool over the incident, penalising the club £4,000 for the behaviour of their supporters — a sanction some are already calling "merely symbolic".
Kick-off is scheduled for 21:00 CET, with both teams eyeing crucial points in what’s shaping up to be a highly competitive group.
