Roared on by a relentless home crowd, Galatasaray began the match at a furious tempo. Every touch by the visitors was met with a deafening whistle, creating one of those intimidating European atmospheres that Istanbul is famous for. The breakthrough arrived as early as the 7th minute following a costly mistake from Ibrahima Konaté. The Liverpool defender conceded a corner that proved decisive.
