Real Madrid - Manchester City 3:0

Real Madrid are already within touching distance of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after a stunning 3–0 victory over Manchester City in Madrid. The Spanish giants, who surprisingly entered the home clash as underdogs, delivered a commanding performance and left Pep Guardiola’s side with virtually no answers.

Recent inconsistent displays and dropped points in La Liga had slightly shaken the confidence of neutral observers. Many believed that Pep Guardiola would outmaneuver his less experienced counterpart, Alavaro Arbeloa. The situation looked even more complicated for the hosts given their injury concerns, with Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham both unavailable.

With expectations largely resting on Vinicius Junior to lead the attack, the spotlight instead shifted to an unexpected hero. On a magical European night at the Santiago Bernabeu, it was Federico Valverde who stole the show.

The Uruguayan midfielder produced a sensational first-half hat-trick, almost certainly securing himself the title of Player of the Week in the UEFA Champions League. Few contenders across Europe are likely to match such a decisive individual performance.

The breakthrough arrived in the 20th minute, and remarkably it began with an assist from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. A long pass released Federico Valverde, who outpaced his marker before reaching the ball ahead of Gianluigi Donnarumma, calmly finishing to make it 1–0.

Just seven minutes later, Vinicius Junior delivered a sharp vertical pass into the box. Once again, Federico Valverde timed his run perfectly and drilled a precise shot into the far bottom corner — doubling Real Madrid’s lead.

The third goal, moments before half-time, was pure class. In the 42nd minute Federico Valverde cleverly lifted the ball over Marc Guehi and struck it on the volley, sending it beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma and completing a breathtaking hat-trick.

And what about Manchester City? As expected from a Pep Guardiola team, the visitors dominated possession and patiently built positional attacks. However, clear chances were scarce. Their best opportunity came after a costly mistake from Hugo Pitarch, which allowed James O’Riley to fire from inside the penalty area. Yet Thibaut Courtois stayed alert and produced a crucial save with his foot.

The final whistle confirmed a resounding 3–0 win for Real Madrid — a superb result heading into the second leg. Still, writing off Manchester City would be dangerous. In a week’s time, Pep Guardiola’s side will have another 90 minutes to fight back at the Etihad Stadium, where dramatic Champions League nights are never far away.
