Their best opportunity came after a costly mistake from Hugo Pitarch, which allowed James O’Riley to fire from inside the penalty area. Yet Thibaut Courtois stayed alert and produced a crucial save with his foot.

The final whistle confirmed a resounding 3–0 win for Real Madrid — a superb result heading into the second leg. Still, writing off Manchester City would be dangerous. In a week’s time, Pep Guardiola’s side will have another 90 minutes to fight back at the Etihad Stadium, where dramatic Champions League nights are never far away.
