Liverpool Suffer Blow in Brighton Defeat as Injury Woes Mount

Liverpool FC endured a frustrating afternoon in the Premier League, falling 2-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion and losing crucial ground in the race for a UEFA Champions League place — while also seeing another key player forced off through injury.

Heading into the match, Arne Slot was already dealing with significant absences, with Alisson Becker and Mohamed Salah both ruled out. The situation worsened early on when Hugo Ekitike picked up an injury just six minutes in, leaving Liverpool short of attacking options.

Brighton capitalised quickly. On 12 minutes, Danny Welbeck rose superbly to meet a cross, guiding a precise header into the top corner beyond Giorgi Mamardashvili to give the hosts the lead.

Despite their struggles, Liverpool found a way back into the contest midway through the first half. Milos Kerkez, an unlikely figure in the final third, reacted sharply to a defensive error and calmly lifted the ball over the advancing goalkeeper to level the score.

However, the second half belonged largely to Brighton. Welbeck struck again in the 56th minute, timing his run to perfection to stay onside before finishing into an empty net and restoring the home side’s advantage.

From that point on, Brighton looked the more dangerous side, creating several opportunities to extend their lead, while Liverpool struggled to generate a meaningful response. In the end, it was a deserved victory for the Seagulls and a damaging setback for Liverpool’s top-four ambitions.
