Atletico beat Barcelona at Camp Nou

Barcelona face a mountain to climb in their Champions League quarter-final following a damaging 2-0 home defeat to Atletico Madrid. Hansi Flick’s side were forced to play the entire second half with ten men in a night of frustration at the Camp Nou.

The game’s turning point arrived five minutes before the interval. Pau Cubarsi brought down Simeone on the edge of the area to deny a clear goalscoring opportunity. After a VAR intervention, referee Istvan Kovacs upgraded the initial decision to a straight red card, leaving the hosts a man down.

To compound the Blaugrana's misery, the resulting free-kick provided the breakthrough. Julian Alvarez stepped up to deliver a clinical finish, curling a sublime strike into the top corner to silence the home crowd.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Hansi Flick refused to sit back and settle for a narrow deficit. The Catalans showed signs of life early in the second half, with the lively Marcus Rashford coming close on two occasions. The Englishman was inches away from an equaliser when his thunderous free-kick rattled the crossbar.

However, Diego Simeone’s men exploited the gaps as Barca tired. In the 70th minute, Ruggeri surged down the left flank and delivered a teasing cross for Alexander Sorloth, who got ahead of Gerard Martin to double the visitors' advantage with a powerful header.

Atletico opted for a pragmatic approach in the closing stages, comfortably managing their lead rather than hunting for a third. While Barcelona have already tasted victory in Madrid this season, overturning a two-goal deficit against such a disciplined defensive unit in the return leg remains a daunting task.
