Liverpool produced a spirited performance but ultimately fell to a second consecutive 0–2 defeat

Liverpool produced a spirited performance but ultimately fell to a second consecutive 0–2 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final, exiting the competition with a 0–4 aggregate loss.

Heading into the return leg, Arne Slot’s side faced an uphill battle after the defeat at the Parc des Princes. In a bold tactical move, Slot deployed both Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak from the start, signalling attacking intent. However, it was PSG who controlled the early tempo.

Inside the opening 10 minutes, goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili was forced into action after misjudging his position, first clearing the ball under pressure and then parrying a dangerous effort from Ousmane Dembele. The French winger looked lively throughout and nearly opened the scoring shortly after, firing over from a promising position.

Liverpool suffered a setback midway through the first half when Ekitike was forced off with an injury. Yet, that moment seemed to spark the hosts. A pinpoint delivery from Mohamed Salah found Milos Kerkez, whose effort was saved, before Virgil van Dijk saw his close-range follow-up heroically blocked by Marquinhos in a defining defensive moment.

The second half saw renewed urgency from the Premier League side. Substitutes Cody Gakpo and Joe Gomez made immediate impact, with Gakpo testing the goalkeeper and Gomez heading narrowly wide. Ryan Gravenberch also came close, driving forward and firing just over, while Kerkez missed the far corner after another incisive Salah pass.

Controversy followed in the 64th minute when a penalty was initially awarded after a challenge involving Willian Pacho and Alexis Mac Allister, only for the decision to be overturned after a VAR review.

As the game entered its decisive phase, Liverpool introduced youngster Rio Ngumoha, hoping for a spark similar to his recent heroics. He came close, but PSG’s goalkeeper stood firm.

The breakthrough arrived in the 71st minute, and it was inevitable. Dembele, who had been threatening all night, unleashed a powerful strike from distance that left Mamardashvili with no chance. From that moment, the tie was effectively over.

Deep into stoppage time, PSG delivered the final blow. A swift counter-attack, led by Bradley Barcola, ended with Dembele calmly slotting home his second goal of the night.
