Chelsea have officially confirmed the appointment of Xabi Alonso as the club’s new head coach. The highly-rated Spanish tactician will begin his role at Stamford Bridge on July 1, 2026, after signing a four-year contract with the Premier League giants.
The decision to bring in the 44-year-old former midfielder is widely viewed as a strategic move by Chelsea as the club looks to establish long-term tactical identity and consistency. Despite a challenging spell with Real Madrid, Xabi Alonso remains one of the most respected and progressive figures among Europe’s new generation of coaches.
In an official statement, Chelsea highlighted Alonso’s outstanding tactical intelligence, commitment to attacking football and strong leadership qualities as the key factors behind the appointment. The club believes the Spaniard is the right figure to guide a talented but evolving squad back to the top level of English and European football.
On his appointment, Xabi said: ‘Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club.
‘From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.
‘There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies.’
