Iraq Hold World Cup Favourites Spain

Spain were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by Iraq in a World Cup warm-up match, raising fresh questions ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Despite entering the contest as overwhelming favourites, the reigning UEFA European Championship winners struggled to impose themselves against a disciplined Iraqi side. Ferran Torres gave Spain an early advantage in the 16th minute, finishing off a well-worked attacking move to put La Roja in control.
However, the lead lasted only 11 minutes. Merchas Doski stunned the Spanish defence with an unexpected effort from a wide position that caught goalkeeper Joan García off guard, levelling the score at 1-1.
Head coach Luis de la Fuente was without a number of his biggest stars, including Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, Pedri and goalkeeper David Raya. Their absence was evident as Spain delivered an uninspiring second-half display, creating few clear-cut opportunities against a resilient Iraqi defence.
