Mexico’s commanding 2-0 victory over South Africa at the Estadio Azteca was already a historic occasion, but Club Tijuana wonderkid Gilberto Mora provided another piece of history.

By stepping onto the pitch as a 65th-minute substitute, the highly sought-after attacking midfielder officially became the youngest Mexican ever to feature at a FIFA World Cup. At just 17 years and 240 days old, Mora shattered a national record that had stood for 96 years, previously held by Manuel "Chaquetas" Rosas since the inaugural 1930 tournament.

The appearance also confirmed Mora as the youngest player at the 2026 World Cup and moved him into sixth place on the tournament's all-time list of youngest debutants.

Knocking on the Door of the King

The Mexican starlet finished a mere five days shy of matching Pelé's legendary 1958 World Cup debut against the Soviet Union.

However, should the Club Tijuana prodigy manage to find the back of the net in Mexico’s remaining Group A fixtures against South Korea or Czechia, he will surpass Pelé to become the second-youngest goalscorer in World Cup history.

Top 6 Youngest Players in FIFA World Cup History

1. Norman Whiteside (Northern Ireland) - 17 years, 41 days vs Yugoslavia (1982)
2. Samuel Eto’o (Cameroon) - 17 years, 99 days vs Italy (1998)
3. Femi Opabunmi (Nigeria) - 17 years, 101 days vs England (2002)
4. Salomon Olembe (Cameroon) - 17 years, 185 days vs Austria (1998)
5. Pelé (Brazil) - 17 years, 235 days vs USSR (1958)
6. Gilberto Mora (Mexico) - 17 years, 240 days vs South Africa (2026)

A Rising Global Phenomenon

Mora’s history-making appearance comes amid a whirlwind period for the teenager. Having already become the youngest debutant and goalscorer in Liga MX history for Club Tijuana, he also became the youngest player of any nationality to win a senior international tournament when he helped Mexico lift the Concacaf Gold Cup at just 16 years of age.

Despite penning a new three-year deal with Tijuana just days before the World Cup, Europe’s elite clubs are reportedly tracking his every move this summer. With manager Javier Aguirre continuing to use him as an impact substitute, Mora's role could grow even more pivotal as the co-hosts eye a deep run in the tournament.
