France Overcome Senegal as Kylian Mbappe Breaks Just Fontaine's Long-Standing World Cup Record

France produced a commanding second-half display to defeat Senegal, although few would have predicted such an outcome after a frustrating opening 45 minutes.

The first half was arguably one of France's weakest periods of the tournament. Possession regularly broke down, Michael Olise struggled to influence the game, Kylian Mbappe found it difficult to control the ball in dangerous areas, while Ousmane Dembele was largely anonymous.

In contrast, Senegal looked the more dangerous side and came agonisingly close to taking the lead. Nicolas Jackson struck the post, while Ismaila Sarr squandered a golden opportunity after being brilliantly set up by Sadio Mane. Had Senegal been more clinical, the story of the match could have been very different.

However, without making a single substitution at half-time, Deschamps watched his side undergo a remarkable transformation. Around the 55-minute mark, France began to take complete control. Their passing became sharper, their movement more purposeful, and the influence of Michael Olise suddenly became impossible to ignore.

The creative midfielder twice produced magnificent passes to send Mbappe through on goal. The first chance went begging, but the second ended exactly as expected — with France's superstar finding the back of the net.

France continued to dominate proceedings and eventually doubled their advantage through another moment of brilliance. Adrien Rabiot delivered a sublime pass that was expertly finished by Bradley Barcola, putting the world champions' runners-up firmly in control.

Senegal briefly reignited the contest in stoppage time by pulling a goal back, creating a tense finish. But any hopes of a comeback were swiftly extinguished. Mbappe produced one final statement, unleashing a powerful strike from around 25 metres to seal the victory in style.
