Canada - Qatar 6:0

Canada recorded the first FIFA World Cup victory in the nation's history in emphatic fashion, crushing Qatar 6-0 in a one-sided Group B encounter at the FIFA World Cup 2026. The landmark triumph lifts Jesse Marsch's side onto four points and puts the tournament hosts firmly on course for a place in the knockout stages.

From the opening whistle, Canada played with intensity and purpose, pinning Qatar deep inside their own half and creating a steady stream of chances. The breakthrough arrived in the 16th minute when Cyle Larin reacted quickest inside the penalty area, converting a rebound to ignite the home crowd.

The pressure continued to mount, and Canada doubled their advantage on 29 minutes. A fortunate deflection sent the ball into the path of Jonathan David, and the Juventus striker made no mistake, firing a first-time effort into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.

The defining moment of the first half came shortly afterwards. In the 33rd minute, Qatar defender Homam Ahmed brought down his opponent on the edge of the penalty area. Following a lengthy VAR review, the referee upgraded the punishment to a straight red card, leaving the visitors with ten men for the remainder of the contest.

Canada wasted little time taking advantage of their numerical superiority. Before half-time, Jonathan David struck again, calmly finishing to complete his brace and send Jesse Marsch's team into the interval with a commanding 3-0 lead.

If Qatar hoped for a second-half response, those ambitions disappeared within minutes of the restart. On the 51st minute, midfielder Assim Madibo launched into a reckless challenge on Ismaël Koné, leaving the Canadian international seriously injured. After another VAR review, the referee showed a second red card to the visitors, reducing Qatar to just nine players.

Koné was forced to leave the pitch on a stretcher, but his replacement made an immediate impact. In the 64th minute, Nathan Saliba curled a superb direct free-kick into the net to extend Canada's lead and underline the gulf between the two sides.

The goals continued to flow. Eleven minutes later, Qatar midfielder Mohamed Manai turned a dangerous low cross into his own net under pressure, making it 5-0. Yet Canada still were not finished.

Deep into stoppage time, Jonathan David completed a memorable hat-trick, becoming the first Canadian player ever to score three goals in a FIFA World Cup match.

With an outstanding goal difference of 7-1 after two matches, Canada have dramatically strengthened their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds. The hosts now sit atop Group B and need only avoid defeat against Switzerland in the final round of fixtures to guarantee first place.
