The landmark triumph of Canada was overshadowed by a devastating injury suffered

Canada celebrated a historic 6-0 victory over Qatar at the FIFA World Cup 2026, securing the nation's first-ever win at a World Cup finals. However, the landmark triumph was overshadowed by a devastating injury suffered by midfield star Ismaël Koné.

The incident occurred shortly after the restart with Canada already holding a comfortable 3-0 lead. In the 52nd minute, Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo lunged into a challenge from behind and caught Koné's leg instead of the ball. The Canadian international immediately collapsed to the turf in obvious pain and was unable to continue.

Medical staff rushed onto the pitch before Koné was carried off on a stretcher. Following a VAR review, the referee showed a straight red card to Assim Madibo, Qatar's second dismissal of an increasingly disastrous evening.

According to reports from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, examinations have confirmed fractures to both the tibia and fibula. The injury is expected to sideline the Sassuolo midfielder for approximately four to five months, bringing his FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign to a heartbreaking end.

Despite the emotional setback, Canada's players rallied together and delivered a touching tribute to their injured teammate. After scoring their fourth goal of the evening, the squad gathered to display Koné's No. 8 shirt in front of the crowd.
