That early opportunity proved to be one of the visitors' few bright moments in the first half. Unable to cope with the pace and movement of the American attack, the Socceroos were forced deep into their own half. The pressure eventually paid off for the hosts. Goalkeeper Patrick Beach, who had been one of the standout performers in the previous match, could do little to prevent an own goal from one of his defenders before Freeman doubled the advantage with a well-taken header.
